We said goodbye to Ryan this morning at our local metro station. He is heading off to Switzerland to meet up with a friend in Lausanne.
The rest of us took the metro to the Montparnasse train station to catch our hour-long train to Tours. There, we picked up ‘Genevieve’ from Hertz.
Over the next two days we will settle Eric into his dorm, do some shopping, help him figure out the bus system and maybe explore Tours a bit.
The University of Tours has at least five campuses; Eric’s dorm is far from all of them!
Tours was once a thriving silk production center with over 20,000 weavers. Louis XI (1461-1483) moved production from Lyons, saying the people were too lazy there!
Joan of Arc had a set of armour made for her in Tours in 1429.
The old town of Tours lies between the Loire River and the River Cher.
Old Town is known for its 15th C timber buildings. The term colombage refers to the assembly of wooden beams, horizontally and vertically in a grid pattern.
These timber buildings in the Place Plumereau have mostly been converted into cafes, bistros and restaurants.
This little square was voted the best place in France for an aperitif.
With Eric settled, it’s time for Kris and Dave to get back to vacationing!
