Italy – Montepulciano to Genova

Leaving Montepulciano this morning we had to backtrack down the skinny roadways and hairpin turns to the bottom of the mesa.

Last night we ate dinner at the wine bar attached to our B&B. We liked the red grape Vin Santo so much we asked our host the name of the winery he purchases from. Turns out it is about 10 minutes away and more or less on our way this morning.

At Valdipiatta Winery, Alexandra insisted we do a quick tasting of their flagship Nobile wine, which of course we liked!

Giovanna’s trunk is now full of wine, and we are off to the Ligurian Coast.  A short detour past Lucca brought us to the tiny hamlet of Borgo a Mozzano.

Ponte del Diavolo (Ponte della Maddalena) is a steep, pedestrian bridge over the Serchio River dating from 1100 AD used by medieval pilgrims.

We had lunch at the foot of the bridge at Osteria del Diavolo where they serve local meats and cheeses on their charcuterie plate.

From Lucca, we started to drive through a small mountain range. It felt like we passed through hundreds of short tunnels on the drive to Genova.

We arrived in Genova in the late afternoon and settled into our room before venturing out for dinner.
