Heading out in Deramakot

We started this afternoon’s drive with another orangutan sighting! Mike was very happy to find a female with a baby.

Mom and baby orangutan

The pair hung out and swung lazily from the branches for a little while before moving deeper into the trees to build a nest for the night.

Orangutans typically build a new nest out of branches and leaves every night before moving on in the morning. They tend to pee and poop in the nest in order to confuse predators to their actual location.

Orangutan nest – lots of leaves to make it soft and comfortable!

A few more interesting sightings today.

Asian Black Hornbill
Huge Honey Bee nest high up in a Koompasia tree

The road through Deramakot ends at another forestry station where we stopped for dinner each night before making the return drive in the dark.

Nice view of the river

A group of Pigtail Macaques were hanging out in the trees across the river.

Many more animal sightings on the drive back.

Fish Owl
Brown Wood Owl
Colugo (Sunda flying Lemur)
We saw this one flying – Mike was concerned that his flashlight caused the Colungo to crash land in the wrong tree!

Four cats live in Borneo: the leopard cat, marbled cat, flat headed cat and the one we went to Deramkot for, the elusive Clouded Leopard. Alas, no Clouded Leopards for us this time.

We had seen several leopard cats running on the road, but they skittered into the grass before we could get photos. Eventually we came across this guy who hung around for a few minutes.

We asked – we’re not allowed to bring one home!

This morning, we said goodbye to another cat, the slightly feral boy who hangs out at the camp, as we made our way out of the reserve.
