Today, after the usual big breakfast we followed A9 to Aviemore to the Reindeer Centre. Yup Reindeer. Mr. Ulsti from Scandavia came over in 1952. As a Sami Reindeer farmer he noticed the land here would be good for them. And as they are easy to farm (basically wild and docile) he decided to bring over 8 for a meat source. Turns out tourist pay more for live ones so a new business was born. Apparently he was right in that their food source and lands are perfect as they have over 150 now. Docile is correct. They are friendly when you have food and really don’t notice you much otherwise. We got to hand feed them. Felt like feeding a horse. All lips, no teeth.
On the way back from Aviemore, we found Tordarroch cottage. This is where Kris’ family comes from. The clan Shaw leader’s house is here. He isn’t. He lives in Spain now 😉 And to boot, we’ve been wanting to see the Highland Cows for days. Turns out this place farms them. The bull was kind enough to pose and show off a little.
And since we’re here, down the road is Dunlichity church with the Shaw burial enclosure.
K,D,R,E, I am glad you are having a good animal time with lots of history thrown in. Hot hot here…you are missing summer. I am leaving Sat, for Blowdown Lake…Stein Valley. Tomorrow I go to Fiona’s concert. Love, Mom
